La Caravane (The Caravan) is the parade created by and for race sponsors that goes off two hours ahead of the riders in the Tour De France. It was founded in 1930, conjured up by Tour founder Henri Desgrange. Conceived originally as a way to pay for the organizer-supplied bicycles that riders had to use at the time. Behind the riders, there is a retinue of team support cars, motorcycles for spares, filming and race officials. It's like a whole circus and major sporting event operations crew on wheels. La Caravane celebrates the spectacle of the caravan, highlighting some classic vehicles from cycling's golden age.
